Cineteca Nazionale Comments About the CIR D-Archiver

The D-Archiver we’re using in Cineteca Nazionale has proven to be a very important tool to digitise our films, above all our very old, shrunken and damaged nitrate material. The table allows to rewind the film in any direction. As it’s electronically driven, no need of pin registration: only one sprocket to position the material and just some slight changes in the settings to be able to screen any film format: 8/S-8mm, Pathé 9,5, 16mm, 2P and 3P 35mm, positive or negative.

By means of a friendly interface, it is possible to set different profiles, regulating saturation, gain, gamma and color. It’s possible to choose any format to capture: from SD to 2K, 8 or 16 bits. The results can immediately be seen at 25fps. Otherwise, the D-Archiver is also able to export the capture to AVI, TIF and DPX files, from which, - with the aid of any edition software-, you’re able to crop, deflicker, dedust the material, in order to perform an initial restoration and to produce either material to dialog with the filmlab, in order to do the film out (we’ll try this step very soon) or to simply produce a DVD to use inhouse -for analysis & research-, or to send to other archives or festivals reducing costs of handling our delicate material.

So, we are very grateful to the renowned CIR Company, heirs of Leo Catozzo craftsmanship- for developing this scanning table specifically for archival use, to aid in the preservation of the integrity and aesthetics of our film heritage.
